Sleeve Embroidery

I created this tunic for Master Roibhilin MacDomnaill upon the occasion of
his accesion to chivalry at Birka AS XXXVIII. Master Roibhilin has an
early period celtic persona. I could find no documentation on Celtic clothing.
I created this tunic from the pattern of another one created by Master
Roibhilin. However, I suspect from my knowledge of Roman garments, that
the construction of this garment is incorrect. It seems to me more likely
that Celtic garments from the same time period had a similiar construction
to Roman garments. I also suspect that the early Celts did not do embroidery,
much as the Romans did not. However, as this was essentially a commissioned
piece, requested to be the same as the previous tunic made by Master Roibhilin,
the authenticity did not seem as important as the overall look of the
garment.
The embroidery is a modified Celtic design of
Annora de Sylveastan. The original design had a hawk in the knotwork.
Master Roibhilin's primary charge on his heraldry is a goose, therefore
I modified the design to include geese rather than hawks. The embroidery
is chain stitch completed in wool.
